WHAT IS A HOST HOME PROVIDER AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
What does a host home provider do?
Host Home Providers (HHPs) are independent contractors who provide care in their own homes, condos, apartments, duplexes, you name it. If you have a spare bedroom, basement, mother-in-law apartment, casita, an unattached apartment on your property, or any extra living space available, any and all of these living options may be a great fit for a specific individual needing support. Depending on individual abilities, HHPs will assist with personal care, meal planning and preparation, medical appointments, community activities, safety skills, shopping and more. Some HHPs may continue to work a full time or part time job while their clients attend a day program or work in the community. Others stay home and care for their clients full time. A successful HHP is caring, honest, mission-driven, patient, a role model and teacher, has excellent listening and communication skills, and will advocate for and encourage their client to reach their life goals.

*Note* TNS’ system is a basic categorizing structure. Each individual is uniquely different and may require a much different support system than another individual who shares the same diagnosis.
The following qualities are in high demand:
– Wheelchair accessible homes
– Single providers
– Excellent skills and/or training for those with behavioral needs
– Excellent skills and/or training for those with medical needs (i.e. CNAs, LPNs, RNs, etc.)

Please check your email once you fill out our short questionnaire. Although we would love to work with everyone, Host Home Providers are chosen on a needs basis. Once the state presents a potential Host Home client to us, we seek to match those HHP applicants that best fit the client’s needs. Please know we desire to work with all qualifying applicants!
Once your questionnaire is accepted and reviewed, we will contact you directly. Please keep in mind that everyone in your home who wants to be a provider must complete an application and the full training requirements.
We are required to run background checks for everyone in the home at the age of 18 and older. We will need full names, phone numbers and email addresses of each individual in the home 18 years old and older. We will also need a list of all who reside in your home/apartment, regardless of age.
Sometimes it can take a while to find a client match for your host home. We encourage you to be patient and check in with us periodically via email. There are things you can do while you wait which may increase your chances of getting a placement: Take CPR and First Aid classes through the American Red Cross, get your feet wet in the field by applying to be a Direct Support Staff with TNS and/or open your home for Respite clients.
